Hi & welcome to my portfolio!

I'm Abby, a UX Designer

I believe in the power of people.

I chose to become a designer because my passion for people fuels a need to create solutions that transform process inefficiencies and technology engagement challenges into relevant, life and business enhancing tools.  As a student of humanity, I am naturally curious and seek to gain practical understanding from all facets.  As a writer, I am able to give a voice to my designs that conveys not just a message, but meaning as well.

My designs infuse technology with purpose; they are experiences that engage, connect, and inspire in a unique and beautiful way.

My Story

So, how did I get here?

I grew up in the world of beauty retail starting in March 2005 as a cashier at Ulta Beauty in southern California. Over the next 16 years, I advanced my career at all levels of store management, relocating through 4 states with the company. My 10th year, I moved to the corporate office in Chicago where I held various positions in Operations, Marketing, and Growth & Development.

2020 brought major life changes, moving my family back to the West coast. I found myself evaluating choices for my next career move as I worked remote. I found UX design--something I had never done before, but that perfectly applied my skills and experience in a new way. Soon after starting my UX design training, a company reorg resulted in elimination of my position. I decided then that it was the perfect time to fully train myself as a designer.

Sixteen years in beauty retail taught me that every person is unique and powerful in their own way, that fostering a unified culture ensures conditions are right for growth, and that embracing diversity of experience and thought produces long-lasting, unshakeable progress. My experience has helped me understand what a business needs to succeed, and also what it’s people need to be happy and engaged. My designs translate this knowledge into experiences that uniformly recognize and deliver on the needs of business and users alike.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT UX DESIGN

I love to learn, and often chase new experiences to fight off boredom. I live for the things that make life easier, more efficient, and enjoyable, and am fueled by the drive to be better every day. After 15+ years in the beauty retail industry, I made the decision in early 2021 to change careers and pursue UX because it allows me to address challenges head on and solve them with solutions that can transform people’s lives in big and small ways. This is an empowering and infinitely fulfilling feeling.

HOW I WORK

With an educational background in Psychology, I employ tools that keep people at the forefront. I utilize design thinking and strategy, and conduct extensive user research to gain understanding and clearly define main problem areas, priorities and concerns. I envision the world my users live in, what environments they find themselves in, and what they might think. I envision solutions that might turn their challenges into powerful tools used to enhance their lives. I design and structure content in Figma, then test, iterate, and repeat until I produce a product that is simple to use, excites, and delivers an ideal solution to the problem.

Other projects and passions

When I’m not practicing UX design wizardry, you can find me in my kitchen attempting new bakes, or chasing adventure and the best eats with my family and friends. Online, I am on Medium and Hello Poetry where I post design insights and creative writings. You can also find some of my recent collaborative work with Grieve the Astronaut, a Seattle-based rock band who is sharing their process of creating music with me in exchange for poetical “musings” that I write in response to each song for their newest album, Signs.

Let's create something amazing.

I am currently pursuing new opportunities and would love to meet you!  Drop a line to find out what we can accomplish together.
